Casa de los Muertos

We have found a wonderful little artists collective in Austin called Casa de los Muertos! The shop is a multifaceted gem, with a full blown glass studio and tattoo studio, as well as a store showcasing original art. The walls are adorned with paintings, drawings and sculpture by friends who are local artists. There is an energy of astounding proportions and it is wonderful to be surrounded by a plethora of inspiration! Collaborations soon to follow . . .

Infinite Anchor

From series of cut outs from 2008, "Infinite Anchor" is made from 3/4" plywood and hand painted in acrylic.

Mexican Neck Tie

 This piece is a cut out by Phrog called "Mexican Neck Tie". Created from used parquet flooring, it is approximately 4' X 1' and hand painted with acrylic. A few years old, part of a series of cut outs from 2008.

Skateboard Collaborations

The top board is an old Santa Cruz Street Surfer that Phrog, Moses and me hand painted during Sunday afternoon sessions at our weekly bonfire in Nacogdoches. The bottom board is a popsicle we found discarded somewhere, and learned to rattle can on it! I call it "Femme Fatale". Hope you like them!!!

Sold Two Prints To An English Lady!

A big thank you to everyone who suggested starting the blog! We just made our first international sale to a wonderful lady from North Yorkshire, UK. And, they both sold within the first 48 hours of posting them!

                   

Mokume Gane and Sterling Silver Ear Plugs, Size 00

Mokume Gane is Japanese for wood grain metal. Alternating layers of metal are fused together in a forge, repeatedly hot forged down into a thin layer called a billet, which is then manipulated to form the patterning. This Mokume Gane piece is from a billet of layered copper and nickel silver, made by me through the patient instruction of Ted McDonah and Lauren McAdams. I also used Ted's patterning technique.

9th Annual Star Of Texas Tattoo Art Revival

We went on our annual excursion to the tattoo convention yesterday, and as always had a blast seeing old friends, meeting new artists, machine builders and more! Luar (Horimaru) was there, ready to do traditional cross tapping, or tebori. Tebori is the name for Japanese cross tapping, a lost art with the advent of modern electric tattooing. Anyone interested in this style needs to meet Luar, just head down to Ancient Ink and see him in action. Say hi to him and Camille from us while your there, too. Today's premier tattoo machine builder, John Clark, was there and we finally tried out his machines in person. He is my only inspiration in tattoo machine building due to his technical prowess and complete originality. His wife and daughter were very hospitable, and invited us to visit his workshop. Yipee! My promise to myself not to get tattooed was almost compromised by an incredible bio-mechanical artist named Gifford Kasen out of Illinois. Luckily, he was working on a sleeve and we exchanged information for future rendezvous. (A few other artists tempted my sensibilities: Heidi Scheck in Seattle, CMFL from Article 91 in Houston, Fusion Ink and Baxter.) Met a really cool couple from Triple Crown, and shared new jewery techniques. Found a superb printer for giclee prints and 1,000 stickers for $150. All in all, besides leaving with no ink, it was the best convention yet!
